From understanding to building — hands-on deep dives

agent37.club

The Full Stack — Complete

Layer 5: Applications ✓S1–S7
Layer 4: Models ✓S8
Layer 3: Hyperscalers ✓S8–S9
Layer 2: Chips ✓S9–S10
Layer 1: Energy ✓S11

We’ve traveled the entire stack. From tokens to transistors to electrons.

Now we build.

“The best way to understand something is to build it.”

The club shifts from lectures to labs. Pick a track. Ship something.

Track 1: AI Tools & Workflows

Build your personal AI operating system

  • Claude Code deep mastery — beyond basics
  • Custom CLAUDE.md files per project
  • Writing skills (SKILL.md) for your domains
  • MCP servers for your internal tools
  • Prompt engineering that actually works

Goal

10x your daily workflow. Not a vague ambition — measure your before and after. Track time saved, tasks automated, quality improved.

Claude Skills Deep Dive

Make Claude an expert in YOUR tools and codebase

---
name: my-domain-skill
description: Expert knowledge for
  my specific domain
---

# Domain Knowledge

## Key Patterns
- Always use X framework for Y
- Our API returns Z format
- Error codes: 4xx = client, 5xx = server

## Code Conventions
- snake_case for Python
- Docstrings on all public functions
- Tests in tests/ mirror src/ structure
  • Triggers: when does the skill activate?
  • Progressive disclosure: basics first, details on demand
  • Domain rules: your team’s conventions baked in
  • Examples: show don’t tell

Build it: Write a SKILL.md for something you do daily. Your API, your framework, your deployment process.

MCP Server Development

Build your own Claude plugins

Model Context Protocol — the standard for connecting AI to external systems.

// MCP server example
const server = new McpServer({
  name: "my-tools",
  version: "1.0.0"
});

server.tool("query-db",
  { sql: z.string() },
  async ({ sql }) => {
    const result = await db.query(sql);
    return { content: result };
  }
);

Project Ideas

  • Slack MCP — let Claude read/send messages
  • Database MCP — query your data naturally
  • GitHub MCP — PR reviews, issue triage
  • Calendar MCP — schedule management
  • Custom API MCP — wrap your internal APIs

The protocol that makes AI actually useful beyond chat.

Track 2: Run Your Own Models

Local LLMs — when and why

  • Ollama — easiest way to run models locally
  • llama.cpp — raw C++ inference, maximum control
  • vLLM — production-grade serving with PagedAttention

When Local Makes Sense

  • Privacy: data never leaves your machine
  • Cost: after hardware investment, inference is free
  • Latency: no network round-trip
  • Learning: understand how models actually work

Quick Start

# Install Ollama
curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh

# Run a model
ollama run llama3:8b

# Use with API
curl http://localhost:11434/api/generate \
  -d '{"model":"llama3:8b",
       "prompt":"Hello"}'

Local Model Showdown

ModelSizeRAM NeededQualitySpeed (M2 Max)
Llama 3.1 8B4.7 GB (Q4)8 GBGood~40 tok/s
Mistral 7B4.1 GB (Q4)8 GBGood~45 tok/s
DeepSeek Coder 33B19 GB (Q4)24 GBExcellent (code)~15 tok/s
Llama 3.1 70B40 GB (Q4)48 GBGreat~8 tok/s
Qwen 2.5 72B41 GB (Q4)48 GBGreat~7 tok/s

Sweet spot for most people: 8B models on 16GB RAM. Fast enough for real-time use. Quality good enough for code completion, summarization, simple tasks. Use API (Claude/GPT) for complex reasoning.

Track 3: Personal Infrastructure

Own your compute, own your data

  • VPS — Hetzner ($5–20/mo), DigitalOcean, Linode
  • Tailscale — mesh VPN, access your machines from anywhere
  • Docker — containerize everything
  • Nginx/Caddy — reverse proxy, SSL

Total cost: $20–50/month for a powerful personal setup.

Why Self-Host?

  • Control: your data, your rules
  • Learning: understand how infra works
  • Cost: $20/mo vs $200/mo for SaaS equivalents
  • Always on: your AI setup runs 24/7

The Self-Hosted Stack

Everything you need, on your own hardware

ServiceToolWhat it Does
Local ModelsOllamaRun Llama, Mistral, etc. locally
Chat UIOpen WebUIBeautiful chat interface for local models
Automationn8nWorkflow automation (open-source Zapier)
DatabasePostgreSQL + pgvectorData storage + vector embeddings for RAG
NetworkingTailscaleSecure access from anywhere
MonitoringGrafana + PrometheusTrack resource usage and uptime

Weekend project: spin up a Hetzner VPS, install Docker, deploy Ollama + Open WebUI + Tailscale. You’ll have a personal AI assistant accessible from any device.

Track 4: Full Project Builds

Idea → design → code → ship

End-to-end AI-assisted projects. Use the tools we’ve studied to ship something real in 2–3 sessions.

  • Define the problem clearly
  • Design with AI (wireframes, architecture)
  • Build with Claude Code + Cursor
  • Deploy to Vercel / Fly.io / your VPS
  • Share with the group

Project Ideas

  • Personal knowledge base with RAG
  • AI-powered CLI tool
  • Automated research agent
  • Custom dashboard with AI insights
  • Chrome extension with AI features
  • API that wraps multiple AI providers

Track 5: Investment Research Tools

Apply what we learned in S9–S11

Build tools that track the AI supply chain. Turn our technical understanding into investment edge.

  • HBM demand tracker — monitor SK Hynix, Samsung capacity
  • DRAM price monitor — spot prices, contract prices, trends
  • Earnings call analyzer — extract key metrics from NVIDIA/TSMC calls
  • Capex tracker — hyperscaler spending trends

The Edge

Most investors can’t tell HBM3e from DDR5. You can. Build tools that turn technical understanding into signal.

Combine Claude + web scraping + data viz = your own semiconductor research dashboard.

Prompt Engineering Workshop

What actually works

Patterns That Work

  • System prompts: set role, constraints, format
  • Few-shot examples: show 2–3 examples of desired output
  • Chain-of-thought: “Think step by step”
  • Structured output: ask for JSON, tables, specific formats
  • Persona: “You are an expert in X”

Anti-Patterns

  • Vague instructions — be specific
  • No examples — show, don’t tell
  • Too many constraints — models juggle poorly
  • Ignoring context window — relevant context > more context
  • Not iterating — first prompt is rarely best

The Builder’s Toolkit

Recommended stack for AI builders

CategoryToolWhy
CodingClaude CodeBest for complex, multi-file tasks
IDECursor / VS CodeAI-integrated editing, fast iteration
AutocompleteGitHub CopilotFast inline completions
DeployVercel / Fly.ioZero-config deployment, edge network
BackendSupabasePostgres + auth + realtime, no infra hassle
NetworkingTailscaleMesh VPN, access anything from anywhere

You don’t need all of these. Start with Claude Code + Vercel. Add tools as your projects demand them.

Session Format

How build sessions work

15 min — Intro / Demo

Quick demo of a technique, tool, or concept. Get inspired.

45 min — Hands-on Building

Pick a track or freestyle. Build something. Ask for help.

15 min — Show & Tell

Share what you built. Demo your progress. Learn from others.

Ground Rules

  • Bring your laptop. This is a lab, not a lecture.
  • Pick a track or go off-script. Both are fine.
  • Help each other. Pair programming encouraged.
  • Ship > perfect. Deploy something, even if it’s rough.
  • Document as you go. Future you will thank you.

What We’ve Learned

The full journey, top to bottom

ApplicationsS1–S7: agents, tools, skills
ModelsS8: transformers, inference, KV cache
Hyperscalerscapex race, data centers
ChipsS9–S10: GPUs, HBM, fabs
EnergyS11: power, copper, nuclear

The Mental Model

You now understand:

  • Why context windows are the size they are
  • Why NVIDIA GPUs cost $30K
  • Why one earthquake in Taiwan could halt AI progress
  • Why hyperscalers are spending $400B on data centers
  • Why nuclear is coming back

This is the edge. Most people in tech can’t connect these dots.

Pick Your Track

Track 1: AI Tools & Workflows

Skills, MCP servers, prompt engineering

Track 2: Run Your Own Models

Ollama, local LLMs, fine-tuning basics

Track 3: Personal Infrastructure
