Turn your AI coding assistant into a whole software team

Who Made This?

Garry Tan

  • CEO of Y Combinator — the most famous startup accelerator in the world
  • Designed the Palantir logo, was an early engineer there
  • Built a social network (Bookface) for YC founders back in 2013
  • Now ships 600,000+ lines of code in 60 days — while running YC

The Big Idea

One person with AI tools can now do what used to require a team of twenty engineers.

The Problem

AI coding assistants are powerful but chaotic

Without gstack

Imagine hiring 10 brilliant interns but giving them no instructions, no process, and no supervision.

They might write great code... or they might delete your database. You never know.

With gstack

Now imagine those interns have a detailed playbook for every situation — how to plan, build, review, test, and ship.

Same talent, but now with structure and guardrails.

Think of It Like a Restaurant

/office-hoursThe Host — greets you, understands what you want
/plan-*-reviewThe Chef — plans the menu and prep work
Claude CodeThe Line Cooks — actually make the food
/review + /qaThe Taster — checks quality before serving
/shipThe Server — delivers it to the customer

Each role knows exactly what to do and passes work to the next.

The Sprint Cycle

Seven steps, always in order

Think — What are we actually building? Challenge assumptions.
Plan — CEO, engineer, and designer each review the plan.
Build — Claude Code writes the actual code.
Review — Senior-level code review catches bugs.
Test — Opens a real browser to test the app.
Ship — Runs tests, creates a pull request, updates docs.
Reflect — Weekly metrics and retrospectives.

21 Slash Commands

Type a command, get a specialist

CommandWhat It Does
/office-hoursBrainstorm & challenge your idea
/plan-ceo-reviewCheck scope from founder lens
/plan-eng-reviewArchitecture & data flow
/reviewStaff-level code review
/qaTest in a real browser
/shipTest + PR + docs

Key Insight

Each command plays a specific role on a team. It is like having a product manager, architect, QA engineer, and release manager — all as slash commands.

Safety Guardrails

Because fast without safe is dangerous

  • /careful — Warns before dangerous commands like rm -rf or DROP TABLE
  • /freeze — Locks editing to one folder only (so the AI does not wander)
  • /guard — Both at once — maximum safety mode

Analogy

Think of /careful like the "Are you sure?" pop-up before you empty the trash.

And /freeze like putting child locks on every cabinet except the one you are working in.

A Real Example

"Build me a daily briefing app"

/office-hours reframes it as a "personal chief of staff AI" with 5 hidden capabilities
/plan-eng-review produces architecture diagrams and a test matrix
Claude Code writes 2,400 lines across 11 files in about 8 minutes
/review auto-fixes 2 issues, flags 1 race condition for human review
/qa opens a real browser, finds and fixes 1 bug
/ship runs tests (42 to 51), creates a PR

Total time: ~30 minutes for a complete feature.

The Productivity Numbers

2013
772 contributions
2026
1,237+ contributions

Garry Tan's GitHub activity: same person, same job, wildly different output.

Key Stats

  • 600K lines in 60 days
  • 10-20K usable lines per day
  • 10-15 parallel AI sessions
"Without a process, ten agents is chaos. With a process, each agent knows exactly what to do."
