OpenClaw:
The AI Everyone's Talking About

The ELI5 Edition

No jargon. No code. Just the story.

What is OpenClaw?

"A super-smart assistant that lives in ALL your messaging apps at once."

WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, iMessage, Teams, Signal…
One AI assistant. Every app you already use.

Think of it this way: Imagine Siri, but it actually works, it lives in every chat app on your phone, and it can do things for you — browse the web, check your calendar, write code, even order food.

It runs on your computer. Your data stays with you. Free and open-source (MIT license).

Who Made This Thing?

Peter Steinberger

  • Austrian tech founder, based in Vienna & London
  • Previously built PSPDFKit — a PDF company used by nearly 1 billion people through apps
  • Sold it for over $100 million
  • Took a 3-year break (travel, soul-searching)
  • Came back and tried 43 projects before OpenClaw took off
  • Started as a weekend side project in November 2025
Fun Fact: OpenClaw was first called "Clawdbot" — a pun on "Claude" + crab claw. Anthropic's lawyers asked him to change the name. It became "Moltbot" (lobsters molt!), then finally "OpenClaw." Two name changes in three days.
From 1 to 510: Peter started alone. In 81 days, 510 people from around the world have helped build it. By February 2026, 83% of contributions come from the community.

Why the Internet Lost Its Mind

Nov 2025

Peter quietly open-sources a side project. A few hundred fans notice.

Jan 27, 2026

Anthropic's lawyers say "change the name." Free publicity! Everyone is talking about it.

Jan 28, 2026

The AI built a social network FOR OTHER AIs called Moltbook. 1.5 million AI "users" join. Humans can only watch.

Jan 28, 2026

Peter gives an interview: "I ship code I don't read." The internet argues for a week.

Jan 29-30, 2026

34,168 fans in 48 hours. That is 710 new fans every hour. CNBC, TechCrunch, Fortune, Nature all write about it.

For context: Kubernetes (the biggest cloud project ever) took about 3 years to reach 100K fans. OpenClaw did it in ~9 weeks. 18x faster.

How Does It Work?

Think of it as a really smart butler that lives in your phone.

You send a message in WhatsApp (or Slack, Telegram, etc.) Step 1
OpenClaw receives it on your computer Step 2
AI brain thinks about what you need Step 3
AI can DO stuff — browse the web, run code, check your calendar, control smart devices Step 4
AI replies right back in the same chat Step 5
Key difference from ChatGPT: You don't go to a special website. The AI comes to you, wherever you already chat. And it can actually take actions, not just talk.

What Can It Actually Do?

Things it can do

  • Answer questions — like having a genius friend on speed dial
  • Browse the web for you and summarize what it finds
  • Control your smart home — lights, thermostats, etc.
  • Schedule reminders and recurring tasks
  • Write and run code — automate boring work
  • Order food, check the weather, play music
  • Read and write files on your computer
  • Take photos using your phone camera

Where it lives

  • WhatsApp
  • Telegram
  • Slack
  • Discord
  • iMessage
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Signal
  • Google Chat
  • Matrix, IRC, LINE, and more...
Fun Fact: There are 31,000+ "skills" in the marketplace — like an app store, but for things your AI butler can learn to do.

Why Security People Are Worried

"It's like giving your house keys to a really smart robot."

The robot is helpful — but it can open every door.

The scary numbers

  • 135,000 installations were left "unlocked" on the internet
  • 341 fake skills found that could steal your data
  • 1.5 million API keys exposed in the Moltbook breach
  • 3 serious security holes discovered with public exploit code

What the experts say

Gartner: "Block OpenClaw downloads immediately."
Andrej Karpathy (former Tesla AI boss): First called it "incredible." Then called it "a dumpster fire" for security. Only ran it in a sealed-off environment.
Bottom line: Very powerful, but you need to lock the doors before you invite the robot in.

What Should Your Team Take Away?

1. AI is now a contributor, not just a tool

OpenClaw's code was partly written by AI. The AI has its own accounts, its own commits, its own name in the project history. This is becoming normal. Multiple AI "bots" contributed alongside 510 humans.

2. You can ship fast IF you automate quality

A new version every 1.7 days? That only works because they have automated checks running on every single change. Speed without safety nets = disaster. Speed with guardrails = superpower.

3. Community is the ultimate growth engine

One person started this. In 81 days, 510 people contributed. By February, the community writes 83% of the code. Open-source + welcoming culture + a real problem to solve = explosive growth.

The Big Takeaway

AI is leaving the chat window.

OpenClaw shows us where personal AI is going. It's not about chatbots in a browser.

It's about AI that lives where you already live — your WhatsApp, your Slack, your Teams, your everything.

It doesn't just talk. It does things.

The question isn't if this happens.
It's how we make it safe — and how we use it before our competitors do.
